CABEZA LA VACA
Location: In the southwestern of Spain, about 115 km from Seville. It’s located in a foothill called Sierra Morena at an altitude of 1000 m., near of a mountain: Tudía; that’s because Cabeza la Vaca is the highest poblation of Badajoz province. About 1800 inhabitants.
Climate: Mediterranean climate, although it’s influenced by Atlantic; with high rainfall in winter and very high temperature in summer. Nevertheless in our village there are many oaks and chestnuts trees
Monuments: There is only a church (very ugly) but you can see a lot of crosses in the streets and many fountains too. The most important monument is the bullring as a result of a tremendously love of bullfighting in here. There is a clock tower and a town hall.
Festivals:
-San Benito, on the 11th July for a week. This is the most important festival here, our village fills up every year! Some bullfights take place that weekend.
-Santa Cruz, 2nd and 3rd May, where all the crosses along the village are decorated by each neighbour. Every year, that night is coming a band and people stay awake following them and stopping at each cross listening to their music.
-Virgen de Agosto, 15th August, there are bullfights too and music (the disco is open!). In the main square it’s placed an orchest and a bar, with free food and drinks for all!!
-San Isidro: 15th May, this is the second most important fair. It’s situated in the countryside, where groups of friends or families take up a concret side under a tree and eat and drink all toghether. They also camp there. There are many stalls where you can buy souvenirs, clothes and funny accesories. Of course, in a big marquee there is music tonight!
Traditions: “La quema del Judas” (Judas’ burning) where a big doll is hanging from a rope in the middle of the square. It’s full of fireworks and it blow up when it’s burning :D. This festival occurs at the end of Easter to celebrate Jesus Resurrection.
“La ensalá de papas” (potatoes salad) on 26th July. It is a day where people from several villages come to Cabeza la Vaca to eat at the countryside with friends.
History: Cabeza la Vaca arised at the mid third century. Roman people built it. Lord Santiago Pedro Fernández Cabeza de Vaca was who reconnoitred independence of the village. The name of Cabeza la Vaca derives from his.
An important historic figure from our village is Diego María de la Tordoya, who set sail for America with Cristobal Colon in 1492. Nowadays we have a monument in his memory.
Looking forward to hearing from you! Kisses J
