CARNIVAL

CARNIVAL

Carnival is a public celebration that takes place immediately before Christian Easter, with variable time (from late January to early March in the year), and combining elements such as costumes, parades and street parties. By extension, some festivals are named similar in all seasons. Despite the large differences presented, their common characteristic is to be a period of permissiveness and some slippage.

ORIGINS: Mardi Gras celebration probably has its origin in pagan festivals, such as those performed in honor of Bacchus, the god of wine, Roman Saturnalia and the Lupercalia, or those that took place in honor of the Apis bull in Egypt. According to some historians, the origins of carnival festivities date back to ancient Sumeria and Egypt over 5,000 years ago, with similar celebrations in the Roman Empire, where the custom spread throughout Europe, being brought to America by the Spanish and Portuguese who colonized us from the fifteenth century.

•Carnival at Cadiz is one of the most famous carnivals in Spain and the world, so it has been recognized worldwide.
